The right to assemble peacefully and speak freely, whether in public or private, is increasingly under attack in America as evidenced by the recent student protests at Columbia University, where speaking one’s mind carries the immediate risk of retaliation by policing agencies. and subsequent incarceration, along with the long-term possibility of being ostracized or black balled in one’s chosen field; thus. speaking up and speaking out, or even defending oneself, carries a possible ‘death sentence’.
